one half of the junior boys, jeremy greenspan makes his second appearance on jiaolong with the aid of none other than legendary, algorithmic composer, laurie spiegel. those not familiar with her work, spiegel is best known for her use of interactive and algorithmic logic as part of the compositional process, spiegel worked with buchla and electronic music laboratories synthesizers and subsequently many early, often experimental and prototype-level music and image generation systems. in the mid 80s, her most widely used software was the music mouse. here, greenspan works her piece >drums< into a confident dj tool, rolling steadily with angular electronic effects over a solid, weighty pulse. >sirius shake< employs a classic kompakt-style schaffle beat, mapping a curious robotic waltz.

hamid s h+ (hpls) label continues to plough a furrow into the freakiest corners of the minimal scene, keeping the spirit of labels like telegraph and minibar alive with off-kilter beats, freaky sampling and wayward synth work from lesser known operators. g76 is up on the a side with the wonky wonders of -father-, packing some seriously squelchy monosynth bass and plenty of beat trickery to wriggle under the skin of the most deviant dancers. h+dk (hamid and denis kaznacheev) tackle the b-side with -tachtagol connection-, keeping the drums as slender as possible and using a sweet but subtle pad as the focus of the track. it s a simple approach, but utterly effective.

baltra has been plying his trade for a few years now, dealing in a distinctly retro brand of house music that could easily pass for a forgotten chicago cut were it not for subtle touches of advanced production tucked away in the mix. on this single for tape throb, the warbling synth tones of up 2 you sound like a perfect fit for the label, while twist of fate smooths things out a more melancholic mood atop a classic jack beat. feds watching strains under a cloud of grit that adds to the backwards glancing vibe of the record, while dis aura opts for a marginally more modern approach spelt out by the plush polysynth tones that pulse throughout.

green village is a label operating out of jersey city that deals in all manner of sounds from rugged house to scuffed up techno, but with a distinct bent towards broken rhythms and plenty of bass. this various artists 12- plies a diverse trade, with all tracks bound together by their ruffness. theft & toyc bring some loud and lurid bass synths to their snaking slice of oddball club music -atlantic-, while bd1982 places focus on dense layers of choppy drums and needlepoint acid arpeggios. eighth ruin delivers a truly head turning beat with the appropriately named -whip-, and then etch pays tribute to a classic movie with the excellent breakbeat science of -predator-.

science fiction shifted from their early deep territories of house to the current broken beats of electro, keeping the characteristic classic analogue warmth. this ep is made by various artists, and it comes under the signature of an obsessive majestic presence of the 808 beat, that sounds like an accidental tribute to the creator of this drum machine, founder of roland corporation, that has died on april the 1st as a fool that changed the way to make music since early 80es. tracks are mostly sustained, from synched sequences of hinode to the final atmospheric obscure modular landscapes of exterminador, chromed by ngly distortions in track 02. dj nephil on the b side introduces a solid visionary chicagesque mellow atmosphere.

after kicking things off with sean thomas’ (cop envy) the weigh, sydney’s outer time inner space return with a collaborative ep from jon watts, the kind-hearted, go-to sound engineer of the sydney club and experimental music scene and otis label owner, hugh burridge (aka hubert clarke jr). as resident djs for otis’ sweet echoes parties and guests for some of sydney’s more open-minded club promoters, jon & hugh have developed their own style of warm up set, largely unrestrained by genre. another view is just an extension of this open approach to club music. there’s an obvious ode to bukem’s good looking records, a lopsided mpc jam that could have been written by a drunk ron trent, a club roller with uk broken beat at it’s heart and a spaced out, dream-scape dub from melbourne mate, rings around saturn (dan white) to round out the ep. the common thread, they’re keeping it deep.

the limited, hand-stamped presentation of the canoe releases matches the music contained within, all grainy and unusual but utterly tooled up for the club. nyra s pet project is providing a fascinating insight into the make up of this ever emerging artist, and tracks like -opening rhyme- are sure to pique interest from all kinds of adventurous spinners. while the track may start in a kind of looped up deep house headspace, after the breakdown it takes an unexpected, thrilling swerve into twitchy acid. -tape trek- is more overt in its surreality with its layers of pitched speech getting run through the mill and splashed over a primal drum machine beat. -galaktik- meanwhile has a touch of old skool rave about it, but it s far from an obvious throwback track. suffice it to say, we ll have whatever nyra s having.

having sprung into action with the sol explorer ep on girasole, william caycedo is back with a new selection of jams on the ever-developing slapfunk. as the label s remit for minimal house and techno broadens, we re treated to low slung leftfield beats on -booty call- before the peppier broken beat groove of -ain t no joke-. -creepin - and -g groove- head into more familiar territory for slapfunk fans, but there s still space for the crisp, laid back funk of -tales from the west- and the off-kilter jazzy vibes of -yes we do- thrown in for good measure.

there are few operators out there with the understated skills to match colin macbean. the man known best as mr g is a master of the stripped down, simple groove and he s been invited to holic trax to demonstrate that with two productions of the most immaculate house music. -soba shioyaki- hovers with a touch of mystery in its melodic hooks - a punchy monosynth basslines and sweetly shifting chords striking a melancholic note perfect for heads-down moments. -komorembi- is more overtly deep, using an urgent shuffle beat to propel spacious chords through the atmosphere in that inimitable mr g style.

proof of the rude health of the australian underground abounds with this new label from phile, who step out with a self-titled debut ep that tells you all you need to know. this is searing, brutalist techno crafted with invention and imagination - the dense crackle of the beats and scorched peals of synth on -found in blood- are a visceral force to behold. -marauder- is mellow by comparison, furnishing a minimal beat with live bass, dramatic string licks and steadily building atmospherics. the analogue dirt of -abhor- is positively evil, and that s before karina utomo s none-scarier vocals come into play. brimming with personality and demanding of your attention, phile made themselves a duo to watch in one fell swoop.

with -nekromant- the labelheads avidus are back on empore music, to present their darker side. the original consists of powerful arpeggiators rolling on a triplet-beat with a trancy vibe. the remix from jens-uwe beyer, formerly known as popnoname and as the curator of the label magazine, delivers a dreamy remix from the original with nice organic percussive elements. berlin based sebastian voigt, who has been making waves with his release on outcast oddity, completes the remixes with a straightened interpretation of the original back to a 4 to the floor beat, even adding even more drive and power if compared to the original. the ep comes full circle with a beatless -synthapella- from the original.

alemayehu eshete is considered the golden voice of ethopia. since his first hit single seul in 1961 he has become the father figure of the soulful stream of ethopian music. in ethiopia no other musician adapted the newest trends from the us soul scene as consequently as alemayehu did. with this new 7- he continues his soulful approach on ethopian music. his funky classic alteleyeshegnem is here re-interpretated by the philophon house band in an even funkier way than the original. a tough beat is crisscrossed by mystic harmonies and a pumping bassline. temar ledje points out the sweet side of master alemayehu. this is another classic tune that comes dosed with a rejuvenating cure by the philophon production team. just listen! the cooperation between alemayehu eshete and philophon was initiated by listros e.v. berlin with support by the federal cultural foundation of germany.

this record is the result of an undeniable desire to uncover a once lost and forgotten gem from beyond the dust. to recover the magic underneath, that has never grown nor subsided and doesn’t belong to anything but itself. a love story between two music labels that found each other in this blissful journey, lossless and something happening somewhere are here to presents the next chapter in their findings. uzoamaka is an original track by king britt from 2002, that still remains as fresh and uplifting as it was 15 years ago. nuno dos santos (sohaso) has been in love with the sonic narrative since it was released, but felt the urge to bring the transformative beauty to a wider audience. in an attempt to recover the original, the original master and pre-master turned out to be lost by the waves of time. calyx mastering have remastered the music straight from vinyl, keeping the raw charm of the original but giving it a sonic facelift to fit with modern standards, also making it available in the digital format for the first time since it’s release. the original by king britt is an ode to the ritual of dance music in it’s purest form. with vocals panning across the stereo field that preach ‘sing, dance, be, free to dance’, it resonates with the primordial human playfulness, joy and expression in all of us. teasing with a melodic bassline, almost reaching twelve minutes running time, it’s a modern hymn that never fails to mesmerize and bring people’s spirit together. besides remastering the original, it gave the opportunity to invite other artists to retell the story. this time the mighty dixon gives the original track an update for modern dance floors. pushing the groove to the foreground, adding some extra percussion and drive while letting the choir guide you to a monumental break in which the chord suspends in the air. “free to… free to… free to…” nuno dos santos has used his magic touch for a short beat edit, which focusses the whole affair on the groove even more. a powerful tool to add some impact to tracks or to break up an otherwise repetitious dj set. mathias schober is back under his sb alias, carefully tightening and shortening the original version from 2002 with his edit to create a version that celebrates the quality of the elements. pushing and pulling, enhancing the entrancing effect of the musical soul.

the fifth release in ygroks limited catalog debuts the dkm project of samantha waldram, a native of barcelona. the a1 is her rework of the sound poem titled little ali hommage to forough farrokhzad by giorgio sancristoforo, a contemporary italian sound artist. the heavy rolling groove makes her track compatible with any dancefloor while still keeping the wild psychedelic flavor of the piece. giorgios original piece opens the b side with its disorienting collage of bells, modular bleeps and cresting, tumbling waves of persian syllables. the ep closes with a stripped down beat and soundscape tool in the finest ygrok tradition

quite scarce and demanded record from os apolos recorded in the netherlands. featured an off the hook afro beat song time of war . limited warehouse find, these records have been remaining for years in original boxes straight from the press plant, never played mint condition.

the 04am a-side contains two south-african 80 s bubblegum tracks, revamped by young dj and producer perdu. he provided the tracks with delicate intros and rearranged them with new percussion, synths and deeper basslines. on the flip afrobot delivers two kind of new beat cuts, making the originals more abstract by some heavy chopping, reducing the amount of samples used, and adding disco breaks to the track jungle. handstamped with another drawing by frank koedood.

berlin based arttu has been dropping his dusty fat beats across numerous techno labels including philpot, clone and 4lux for a few years but it was 2016’s track ‘hoodies’ on arttu’s own imprint cyblo that caught the attention of accidental label boss matthew herbert (and which remains firmly in herbert’s record bag). arttu was invited onto the accidental jnr roster and has delivered a chunk of techno with so much swing it made donkey kong blush. arttu takes the most simple of jazz bass hooks and loops across a rigid kick, it’s when those hats kick in that the groove goes fucking wild. the presence of us native roberto q ingram on vocals brings a full detroit gangster flavour to the party. initially arttu and roberto had an idea to record a simple and sweaty track with roberto on the mic and arttu at the control of some dusty old machines. the result, ‘bass trakk’ is exactly that: roberto dropping lyrics over a raw beat and a massive bassline. the ep is rounded off with a deep bit of techno ‘debris’ with all the trappings of the darkest hour of a berlin winter in which it was recorded.

frigio records is going back in time for its latest release, some 38 years into the past. back then a young newcastle man was experimenting with early electronic instruments and synths. mick clarke is his name and nearly forty years later he is still at it. two tracks have been borrowed from clarke s seminal games lp, each given a bit of modern boot polish from minimalrome s heinrich dressel and frigio father juanpablo.

-walls of the night- is a blissed out work of ambient prog rock abstraction. think rumbling horror score and soaring guitar strings. heinrich dressel offers a giallo dipped remix. the building bars of the original are maintained, beats added for ballast and darkened organ keys for a remake etched with murderous intent. the flip is introduced by the dreamy -time is now.- slender synthlines intertwine with gentle strings in a cerebral work. juanpablo tweaks the 1979 material. syrupy acid lines swim in meandering currents, a thick beat keeping time in murky waters of modulations and undulations.

the people in fog are back on sov! as smooth sky blue colour cat can represent, this ep has a smoother beat than the artists usual style. if you remember their previous ep with a darker colour, now the punching kick and identical house bass are gone and this ep is true showing off the producer s ability as a musician who can adapt to any kind of diversity. the first track last song has deep bass and atmospheric sounds, like a typical romanian loop, but after the long trippy beat when the piano sounds kick in, the atmosphere changes and brings back the emotion. the second track get funky is also truly hybrid version of house, while the combination of funky vocals and the endless hi-hat and shaker keep the groove tight and the deep down pad sounds mixed smoothly with the forest of beat make for a truly a unique character. the last track alright is a very joyful one, even though it uses a typical funky house vocal sample. its unique way of playing percussion and vocal keep the groove totally all-right

1985, restored from a vintage vinyl copy (masters were lost long time ago in chicago...) copies sold for 0. on the youtube thread for the track a cousin of t. woodard says they pressed 2.500 copies of this - but that seems hard to believe unless they didnt sell and got recycled at trax and/or were simply thrown out, as this rarely show up anywhere. this is a very early and simple track which sums up the new and experimental sounds of early 1985 along with tracks such as jesse sanders on & on and funkin keith funkin with the drums. basic early house music that havent lost any of its relevance.
